About
About TinyCalories
A practical desi food calorie calculator plus plain-language guides that help people understand familiar Indian and Pakistani portions.
What this site is for
TinyCalories has two jobs that work together:
- Utility — a visual calorie calculator for familiar Indian, Pakistani and shared desi foods. You tap foods, adjust portions and see a plate total in seconds.
- Editorial learning — question pages, comparisons, guides, topics and reading paths that explain why numbers change (oil, katori size, restaurant vs home) without turning into medical advice.
If you only need a quick total, use the calculator. If you want context after a surprising number, open a linked question or comparison built on the same food records.
Who publishes this
Content and product decisions are published by TinyCalories editorial under the TinyCalories site name. We focus on everyday South Asian meal patterns—roti, rice, dal, sabzi, curry, snacks and chai—because those portions are what people actually assemble.
We do not claim to be a clinic, hospital, registered dietitian service or government nutrition agency. Where a number is stronger, we say why (for example USDA FoodData Central source matching with an FDC id and a local extract). Where it is still a working estimate, we label it clearly.
Experience and expertise (how we earn trust)
- Experience — defaults use familiar household language (katori, medium roti, plate of rice) instead of only lab gram language, then keep gram weights behind the scenes for scaling.
- Expertise — calculator logic, portion models and editorial templates are maintained as structured product work with review dates, data versions and validation gates—not anonymous scraped listicles.
- Authoritativeness — we prefer primary composition sources such as USDA FoodData Central when a food is a clear match. We do not invent ICMR or Pakistan FCT citations without extracts.
- Trustworthiness — publishable cards use reviewed local photos; placeholders are not clickable; draft food shells stay noindex; corrections improve the shared food record.
Editorial standards
- Lead with a direct answer when the page is a question.
- State the serving assumption the calculator uses.
- Separate estimate language from source-matched language.
- Link back to the live calculator so readers can check the same default.
- Refuse medical, therapeutic or weight-loss prescriptions.
- Record reviewed-by and reviewed-at on published pilots; that is editorial review, not clinical sign-off.
Full provenance rules live on the trust page and in the calculator methodology section.
